Avaya introduced an innovative framework to help enterprises deal with the security and efficiency challenges arising as the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and digital transformation push compute functions out to the edge of the network. The Avaya framework for the Everywhere Data Center addresses these challenges, introducing the Avaya Pivot operating platform and the Avaya Arc orchestration engine. Avaya also announced the Avaya VSP 8600, a modular Ethernet switch specifically designed to complement the unique capabilities of Avaya Pivot and Avaya Arc.

Swedish telecoms equipment giant Ericsson suffered an "unsatisfactory and mixed" Q1, says CEO Borje Ekholm, as the vendor recorded a net loss of SEK10.9 billion ($1.2 billion) and an 11 percent year-on-year decline in sales. Ekholm said during a conference call that the company's performance has been affected by restructuring costs, as well as a faster than anticipated decline in sales of its legacy portfolio.

Elisa, a leading telecommunication, information communication technology (ICT) and online service company in Finland, successfully completed a field trial of Nokia's XGS-PON technology, achieving the country's fastest broadband speeds. With 10Gbps symmetrical (downstream and upstream) capabilities, the use of XGS-PON will allow Elisa to cost-effectively deliver ultra-broadband access needed for new high-speed, high-quality residential and business services.

In 2016, the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) met full and diverse range radiocommunication spectrum needs for the State of Qatar issuing a total of 4,059 (up by 145% from 1,654 licenses in 2015) spectrum licenses during the year. The number of frequencies assigned also increased significantly to 2,538 (up by 117% from 1,167 in 2015).Type approval certificates issued for radio and telecommunications terminal equipment (RTTE) remained relatively unchanged at 1,114 (from 1,212 in 2015).
