With the active participation and sponsorship of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA), SAMENA held its annual summit at the Atlantis Hotel in Dubai, in the presence of H.E. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence in the United Arab Emirates, as a guest of honor at the summit, and with the participation of a group of decision-makers and workers in the field of ICT in the public and private sectors in the Middle East and North Africa region.

During a session entitled “Connectivity: What the Underserved Want, What the Underserved Get” at the SATEXPO Summit Stage at CABSAT 2023, experts convened to discuss the digital divide, barriers to serving people, satellite and mobile innovation, community Wi-Fi and spectrum usage, among other points.

In 2022, 720 million people remained offline in the least developed countries (LDCs), with an estimated 407 million using the Internet. Considering LDCs as the world’s greatest untapped resource with needs that must be addressed to fulfill the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) 2023 focuses on “empowering the least developed countries through information and communication technologies.”

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) has announced the nomination of H.E. Eng. Mohammed Al Ramsi, TDRA Deputy Director General for the Telecommunication Sector, as Chairman of the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) 2023, one of the largest global platforms of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), hosted by the United Arab Emirates at the Dubai World Trade Center from November 20 to December 15, 2023.
