Red Hat actively collaborates with local communities, partners and customers to drive innovation through open-source technologies. In an exclusive interview with Telecom Review, Martin Lentle, VP of Sales, NEMEA, Red Hat, shares his views on this innovation, the challenges and opportunities for modern enterprises, as well as his strategic outlook on edge computing, among other insights.

Red Hat believes that open source is what powers innovation. How is this being reflected in your customers and partners in the NEMEA region?

Red Hat firmly believes that open source is the bedrock of innovation. This conviction is palpable in the NEMEA region, where customers and partners are increasingly adopting open source technologies. Numerous organizations in this region have recognized the inherent advantages of open source — its flexibility, cost-effectiveness and ability to tailor solutions to specific business needs. As companies embrace containers and cloud-native technologies, they face the challenge of integrating and modernizing existing systems and workloads that may not align with modern computing requirements. This becomes particularly pertinent given the legacy application backlog that most large enterprises grapple with. Red Hat Virtualization offers a solution by providing a container resource in the form of data centers that can be kept separate, comprising logical resources (clusters and hosts), network resources (logical networks and physical NICs) and storage resources (storage domains).

What are the key challenges and opportunities for enterprises in today’s modern IT environment? How is Red Hat responding to these?

In today's modern IT environment, enterprises encounter challenges related to scalability, security and managing complex hybrid and multi-cloud environments. Additionally, they need to remain agile and responsive to rapidly evolving market conditions. Red Hat tackles these challenges head-on by offering a comprehensive portfolio of open source solutions, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, OpenShift and Ansible. These solutions empower enterprises to build, deploy and manage applications consistently across diverse environments, thereby enhancing both agility and security.

To accelerate AI/ML workflows and the delivery of AI-powered intelligent applications, Red Hat provides self-managed Red Hat OpenShift or an AI/ML cloud service. Data science and machine learning play pivotal roles in driving innovation and generating business value across multiple industries. However, many companies struggle with the complexity of integrating various data sources with diverse model training and deployment technologies. Red Hat addresses this complexity by providing Red Hat OpenShift Data Science, contributing to Open Data Hub, and fostering an extensive partner ecosystem, thereby ensuring organizations can harness the full potential of machine learning.

Can you share the strategic outlook of Red Hat for the NEMEA region in terms of edge computing? What can your existing and prospective customers expect in 2024 and beyond?

Red Hat recognizes the escalating importance of edge computing in the NEMEA region. Edge computing has the ability to revolutionize industries by connecting computation closer to data sources, reducing latency and enabling real-time decision-making. Looking ahead to 2024 and beyond, customers can expect Red Hat to continue investing in edge computing solutions. Red Hat will provide tools and platforms that seamlessly facilitate the deployment and management of applications at the edge, ensuring enterprises are at the forefront of this transformative technology.

At Red Hat, we are setting the standard for what hybrid cloud can achieve, enabling companies to take the next defining step for their industry. We believe that an open approach to hybrid cloud infrastructure is essential, as it provides companies with the flexibility and freedom necessary to unlock the full potential of edge computing. We view edge computing as an opportunity to extend the open hybrid cloud to encompass data sources and end users. Edge computing has already made significant strides across multiple sectors, including manufacturing, automotive, energy, utilities, finance, healthcare, retail, telecommunications and government.
